The protocol
What protocol should your websites use?
What a URL is
The story so far
A user clicks on a link to a page, say to rosie.html
. The browser asks for the file, gets it, and renders the HTML it receives.
The file the browser asks for can be local, that is, on the same computer as the browser. Usually, though, the file is remote, on a server somewhere on the internet.
Requests and files
The web works by sending files to browsers. Some other things as well, but mainly sending files to browsers.
Different types of files have different data in them. When a browser gets a file, it looks at the type of file, and does what that type of file requires.
